Wierm Egg eBook Jennifer Garlen
Garlen has written an awesome coming-of-age novel that can be enjoyed equally well by young adults and grownups alike. She does an excellent job at characterization, and is very thorough in her description of setting, giving the reader a rich world to explore. As I began reading this novel I kept thinking it reminded me of something, but I couldn't figure out what it was until today: Garlen's style reminds me of the prose that Tolkien used in THE HOBBIT.There is a very unique aspect to this novel, which I found fascinating: While there are elements of the standard fantasy quest here, the main character is quite unique for the genre, using bravery and intellect to achieve his goals; that's a very refreshing change from the brute force method so tiresomely used in fantasy fiction these days.
If you're looking for a really good fantasy novel, then you could do much worse than WIERM'S EGG.

Wierm Egg eBook Jennifer Garlen Reviews
‘Wierm’s Egg’ is a delightful fantasy tale about a fierce but tender-hearted dragon named Sylla and her adopted human son Wiermig, who washed ashore as the lone survivor of a shipwreck when he was an infant. Sylla and Wiermig develop a loving mother-son relationship. Sylla is able to transform into human form courtesy of a magic ring and accompanies Wiermig to the nearby village of Ush to learn the ways of humans.
The bright, charming Wiermig easily adapts to human life, but at age 12, he and his mother are summoned to a meeting of dragons called the Circle of Wierms. The dragons decide Wiermig must test his worth by becoming a dragon’s apprentice and undertaking a pilgrimage to find the legendary Seeker of the Deep. Sylla’s brother, a lazy purple dragon named Willais, is the only one that offers to mentor Wiermig.
When Wiermig and Willais discover disturbing news about the possible return of the evil black dragon Erozur, the story gains a sense of urgency as the two wanderers must focus and investigate the rumored threat. During his quest, Wiermig encounters an immortal sage imprisoned by his own magic, mysterious wood witches, an obsessed pirate, spoiled damsels in distress, hoard spiders, and, of course, the mighty Erozur.
The adventures range from humorous to exciting, but the heart of the novel remains the relationship between Wiermig and Sylla. In fact, their bond is so well-written and established in the first third of 'Wierm's Egg' that it fuels the emotionally satisfying conclusion despite Sylla’s absence for most of the final two-thirds of the book.
Fans of fantasy novels and fairy tales will no doubt notice Garlen’s not-so-subtle tips of the hat to classic works of the genres. From the title of the first chapter (‘An Unexpected Catch’) to Wiermig’s random transformations into various animals after swallowing Sylla’s magic ring, ‘Wierm's Egg' respectfully draws inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and T.H. White’s ‘The Once and Future King,’ among other classics. Still, Garlen deftly manages to create her own unique fantasy world, where cleverness and compassion, not swords and warfare, are the most effective weapons against evil.
This is a really sweet book; Ms. Garlen’s writing reminds me of Robin McKinley for some reason. Not your usual trite fantasy, but what felt like a genuinely original story. Even the bard’s song lyrics were very well done and believe me, I seldom read song lyrics in a story because they're usually so badly written.
Overall avery good book with quality writing. Seems to have been professionally edited as well. Quite an enjoyable read and a nice surprise from what appears to be an independent author. I will definitely be reading more of this author's books!
This book is definitely worth buying and reading. It is very well written and has been thoroughly edited and proofread to bring you a story that is well told and free from the errors that afflict so many indie novels. Moreover, the well told story is a great story with interesting characters. She creates a lovely mythology regarding dragons and works in bits and pieces from some more obscure folk and fairy tales.
Wierm's Egg is a beautifully composed story that deviates from the cliché warrior hero fantasy novels that abound. I love how the author has created a hero who doesn't need to wield a sword to be strong, but who also isn't a strict pacifist. Too often, boys are told by the books that they read that strong heroes must be warriors. While some boys thrive with this message, many do not. Wierm's Egg shows another path. Once I read this book, I knew it would be perfect for a particular nephew of mine. He hated karate, but he loves drawing and music. He and boys like him need more books like this to show them that they don't have to fit a warrior stereotype to be strong, courageous and heroic.
