In Source of Life, Léonard Lassalle tells us of the unusual experiences that wove through his life after starting a spiritual training when he was 19 years old.

These experiences came about, not because of an intentional activity of his mind or heart, but rather by trusting and following what came to him spontaneously from his inner nature. Source of Life takes the reader into the intimacy of Léonard’s spiritual consciousness and its effects on the every day material needs.

Léonard was born in 1937 in Nice and was raised in the South of France. He attended AS Neill’s Summerhill School in England, studied art in Paris and in London where he met Mélinda. They married in 1959 and brought up their seven children in France and in the UK.

This is probably the best book ever written by a Subud member. Many past Subud writers have relied too much on reporting the experiences and comments of Bapak Muhammad Sumohadiwijojo (the Indonesian founder of Subud). Mr Lassalle expressses a profound love and respect for Bapak but rarely quotes him or writes about him. There are, however, reports of some wonderful experiences that reflect what Bapak means to Mr Lassalle. Another deficiency of a number of past Subud writers is that they have brought in to their narrative non-Subud practices, so that one is left unsure about how Subud has affected them as opposed to how the other practices have affected them. A Source of Life reports exclusively on the author's experiences that he attributes to the practice of the Subud latihan. His experiences are often profound and some readers will perhaps find them difficult to believe. I think it is apparent from reading this book that: (a) Mr Lassalle was born with a highly evolved soul and the practice of the latihan allowed it to continue to evolve to a more advanced level than can normally be expected (b) Mr Lassalle appears to have taken to the latihan like a fish to water and wasted little or no time doubting it or resisting (consciously or unconsciously) its effects (3) he comes across as a highly ethical person who has wasted no energy on building or reinforcing a false self at the expense of another's dignity.

Mr Lassale for the most part eschews religious language but does not hide his gratitude to his Creator or his willingness to surrender to the will of his Creator.

Subud members who read this book will probably feel a deep feeling of sympathetic joy for the grace bestowed on Mr Lassalle and a renewed profound sense of gratitude for having received the latihan of Subud. Non-Subud members will probably be touched by this book sufficiently to want to make enquiries about Subud. I hope they will receive a spiritually adequate response to their enquiries.
