I'm a little biased about this book since one of the stories is about "Soldier"...my dog. Caryn did a wonderful job writing this book. She did great research, interviewing my wife Sharon several times,and got good old Soldier's story spot on. She makes a wonderful case for adopting one of the many,many dogs that need good homes.
Underdogs is a must book or gift for all dog lovers. You will laugh, cry, feel empowered and want to hug your 'kids' while reading this book. Caryn Casey has a gift in relating the stories of some of the dogs that have been given a second chance at life in new forever homes.
I like to remind folks to adopt a pet, spay/neuter your pet and make sure that your pet has a ID.
Buy a book for yourself and at least one for a friend!
When I bought Underdogs I knew that I would read inspiring stories about dogs who overcame even the direst of circumstances. What I didn't know is that I would find myself in tears on my couch over the life stories of these incredible animals.
I also didn't know that I would learn more than a thing or two about puppy mills, the adoption process, and the important work that is being done to help these lovable and deserving dogs.
Underdogs is the perfect book for dog-loving people like myself, young and old, avid readers and casual readers alike. Do yourself- and rescue dogs- a favor and read this moving book.
I sat at the Laundromat reading Caryn Casey's new book, UNDERDOGS. A little boy about eight stood off to one side. He said, "That must be a good book."
"Why?"
"You keep smiling."
"It's about some very brave dogs."
He tilted his head to read the title. "What's an `underdog'?"
"An underdog is a kind of hero, someone who wins against all odds."
Caryn Casey captures the heroic not only in the dogs whose stories of transformation she tells but also in their owners who experience transformations of their own from having loved so well. The book does what every good book should do. Makes you want more. I wished only to read it slowly enough to give Caryn time to write the sequel before I finished. UNDERDOGS is about courage. It empowers the underdog in each of us.
What fuels this powerful read is Casey's own take on each animal. Each story is a movie. She writes from the heart without sentimentality. She enchants and does not delude. A dog's most endearing qualities take center stage as well as his idiosyncrasies. The dogs she writes about are brave survivors who often come with special "issues." By focusing in depth on each animal's story of survival, Casey transfers to her readers a sense of hope no matter the issue, no matter the breed.
Casey is hard hitting when it comes to dealing with the realities of the dog world. Each chapter tackles head on the sobering downside for far too many dogs. Chapter titles such as Abandonment, Greed, Missing, and Mismatched give a taste of the topics she throws her heart into. She handles each difficult subject with well-researched data and an abundance of helpful resources. No dog or owner needs ever be a victim again.
