The second novel is another sci-fi goodie, “Scratch One Asteroid” by Willard Hawkins, which deals with treachery and piracy in deep space. The most vicious criminals of time and space rode the penal ship Verulin, the ship that was known for being “escape-proof.” It’s final destination was a massive penal colony on the distant asteroid, Ceres. There the Verulin’s three hundred-plus prisoners would be deposited and permanently lodged. But it didn’t take too long for a hardened space criminal like Brent Agar to devise a way out of his prison cell; and then to secure a one-way escape ticket into the wilds of outer space on board a small space cruiser. Unfortunately, it also meant bringing along a thuggish space pirate named Pete Monson, as well as the beautiful niece of a Terran millionaire. The niece’s name was Vesta Clement, and at the end of their journey was a forced landing on her uncle’s lavish private asteroid. Only all wasn’t right in paradise, as the asteroid turned out to be crawling with green-skinned Venusians—and her uncle was nowhere to be found…

I am loving what Publisher Gregory Luce is doing with these out of print and public domain novels and stories. Putting them in large oversized trade paperbacks with the original lurid covers on each side of the books like an old Ace Double was a great and fun idea. Now they have even improved on the formula by adding the original interior illustrations which makes it even better.I bought this book because it featured a novel by Otis Adelbert Kline that I had not read. Kline for those of you not in the know was one of the greatest Edgar Rice Burroughs imitators . I have greatly enjoyed all his novels so far. This Armchair Fiction edition not only gives you the novel but a second space opera saga by Willard Hawkins.
The Secret Kingdom novel was originally serialized in the 1929 Amazing Magazine. All the Bob Dean interior illustrations that accompanied each segment are also included. This novel was co-written with his son Allen S. Kline.
It is a great Lost World adventure about explorer Alfred Bell as an exploration into the jungles of South America leads to a discovery of a Lost Civilization existing on a almost unreachable plateau. Of course he meets a beautiful white girl named Nora Flores who he falls in love with. But of course she is scheduled to be married to the evil High Priest and second in command.
To make things worse for Bell, he is given Six Wives by the Chief for the good deeds he has preformed. Lots of action and intrigue involving Head Hunting natives and a Monster Sized Boa Constrictor. This is a very fast paced and fun novel. If you like Edgar Rice Burroughs , I am sure this book will not disappoint.
I had never heard of Willard Hawkins but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Scratch One Asteroid. It was printed in a 1952 issue of Amazing Magazine and has never been reprinted since. To be fair it only a Novella, not a full novel.
A great two page Ed Emshwiller illustration accompanies this story. The story starts on a starship destined for a Prison Planet. Two prisoners make their escape when they stow away on a ship piloted by a beautiful young lady on her way to her uncle's private asteroid. When they arrive they discover something is very amiss on the asteroid. Hawkins plot had lots of twists and turns and I greatly enjoyed this yarn. The green skinned evil Venusians makes this story seem a little dated but it is a fun read.
This is the best Armchair Fiction Double I have read so far, and I will be exploring their Library some more in the future.
