This review probably won't really be helpful, because I'm not going into any details, but I wanted the ability to rate the book and we can't "like" books on Amazon like we used to be able to do. Anyway, I really like this book a lot. I didn't care for a couple of the novellas in this series because sometimes some of the details didn't quite fit with the other books but I really think that's because the books weren't written in the order they should actually be read in. Anyway, I really liked this book. There were quite a few times I laughed as I read it. It was just a nice story that continues the extended Macleod/Mackinnon/de Piaget/Cameron clan. I really enjoy this series and almost wish I hadn't already read all of the books, because I want to read more about them. I also liked how Jennifer's grandmother made another appearance in this book too.Tags : Roses in Moonlight (Macleod Family) [Lynn Kurland] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>From the author of Dreamspinner </i>and A Dance Through Time</i>... Roses in Moonlight Macleod Family Lynn Kurland 9780515153460 Books Reviews
Excellent new book by Lynn Kurland. To be honest, I've read all her romances and can't wait for the next to come. This was an excellent story with nice little plot twists. The romance was believable and lovely. The time travel was minimal, but perfect for the story. I tried to go slow, but as always, finished in a day. I was surprised it was Derrick's story being told...there are many characters I was waiting to hear about...but it was wonderful. It really makes me feel like I need to rush home to my little Scottish cottage and the shore. Anything I share about the story would give it away, but think innocent girl, thugs, priceless antiques, dashing hero, priceless jewels, ancestors, Elizabethan England, Hamlet, spy toys, a ghost or three, and true love...and nice cars. Can't wait for the next one. I think I'll have to go pull out one of the previous stories and snuggle back down for a well loved story.
I'm already a Lynn Kurland fan, so I expected to enjoy the book. However, I was surprised to find out how much I enjoyed the adventure with Derrick Cameron and Samantha Drummond. I finished it in one day, and had that lovely moment of "Wow" at the end of the story. I rated it five stars because of the little plot twists that avoid predictability, plus I really liked these people and their friends.
I'm sure other reviews will highlight the story line (it's time travel folks, so believability is optional). I want to touch briefly on the development and evolution of the main and supporting characters. Samantha was incredibly sheltered, but she is not as fragile as she appears. Her character at first appears to be wimpy, but in actuality she grows to discover that kindness is a part of who she is. She also grows in confidence, which reveals her core of strength, resolve, loyalty, love and compassion. She's feisty and smart.
Derrick is strong, and does not appear to be a "chivalry first" type of man. But he's real, a bit of a jerk at times, and determined not to like Samantha overmuch. Although he comes through in a pinch, he's a genuine modern day hero, susceptible to injury, pain and a need for help. I love his self-talks, they are both insightful and funny. He is adorable.
Of course the expected and surprising connections with characters from other books is always wonderful, but I think what really brought it home for me was the new dimension of sidekicks Oliver, Peter and Rufus. They really got an opportunity to show more of who they are - and they were funny. These are the lads you want to have your back. Swords and knives are generally the weapons of the day, so the cool 21st century James Bond spy gadgets, not to mention the ever popular Aston Martin Vanquish, just added a nice flavor to the story. I must say however, I'm now looking at Ewan in hopes that he gets a lass of his own.)
In spite of all of my name dropping, one can make this the first Kurland book they ever read, and still really enjoy the story on its own. Cheers.
I find myself constantly looking for books by LK. I love the Knights, I love the time travel. I love the PIA mean and often the PIA women. I was so excited to see a new book, rapidly purchased and onto my kindle - *sigh*
I will not give away the plot or the characters - I hate that when others do so. My beef with this book, is that it is just dull. The plot just doesn't evolve and I found myself skipping pages to see if anything interesting happened - honestly I didn't even finish the book, which is unheard of with previous books of LK's, I was close enough to know however, that nothing earth shattering was going to happen.
I miss the books of old, where something would make me catch my breath, and certainly not want to put the book down.
I know that LK has been keeping these themes going a long time, but I will be really leery of buying any future books if this is what is going to happen.
Lynn Kurland is an author that can make the sensual sizzle WITHOUT explicit sex, indeed in this book they don't have sex till AFTER the wedding for something really refreshing.
This novel is a wonderful investment of time and you watch two characters both evolve and help each other to over-come their own hang-ups and problems that they'd never share with anyone but their "Soul mate".
The only problem I had in the very beginning was so many people and names, that they got tangled in my mind but once you get them straightened out in your mind (early on)--then the book takes off and you must hold on to your hat because they travel back in time and make the hair on your neck stand up in attention!
This book is all about love, trust, and family! What a refreshing subject to read. It's also about friends helping friends and some good humor.
I love Derrick and Sam's story (Samantha) it just lifted my spirits when I needed that lift and gave me great enjoyment.
