The Dragon and the George Gordon R Dickson 9780345350503 Books Reviews

One of my favourite books. It was the science fiction book club edition with the original boris vallejo artwork in hardback and was in surpurb condition. My brother loved getting it for his birthday-this wasone of his top three books ever.
A fun fantasy frolic, following the adventures of a man and his girlfriend wooshed into a land straight out of a classic 1980s fantasy novel. The magic system is classic , with the twist of the " Auditing Department " adding humor. Solid 5 stars, don't know why I never heard of these books before! I'll be being reading them
I read this book as a kid and remembered liking it a lot. I bought it to read again so I could continue the series. Pretty straightforward fantasy, no overly adult stuff, so good for all ages. The main character is a sort of every man with a lot of room for improvement. The real pull for me was the other characters, especially the wizard and the wolf. They're far more interesting.
I've read other books by this author and enjoyed them but this missed the mark for me. The main character, who explains how smart he is, comes off extremely dense. He has a few good realizations but then either disregards them or applies them very badly. The humor hasn't done much for me and the "zany" personalities remind me of characters in childrens cartoons, tedious and dumb characters.
While the book contains charm and promise, delivering a light read without breaking a sweat, it bogs down in the middle and never recovers. While I liked Dickson's writing style, his narrative choices often baffle me. His characters and situations feel archaic even for the 70's (but he does try to be modern). It has more in common with a 60's body-swapped science fiction story than a fantasy. Don't feel bad skipping it, but if you find the book at a good price and you want some fluff, it's exemplary fluff.
I first read _The Dragon & the George_ around the time the late Gordon Dickson wrote it. I enjoyed it then, and still do, now -- so much so that I purchased the full series, even before I had finished half of this first book.

Jackson's knowledge of medieval history, combined with his great expertise in science fiction and fantasy, make for a great read. His skill in putting sentences together in a sensible combination meant that the hours I spent reading about Jim Eckert's adventures as a dragon seeking to rescue his human sweetheart from the forces of evil entertaining and amusing.

I recommend any and all of this gentleman's books to any lover of good writing and or great storytelling.
Gordon R. Dickson's "The Dragon and the George (The Dragon Knight Series Book 1)" is a fine start to his "Dragon Knight" series. The universe Dickson describes is interesting and the plot well-done. The characters' behavior might be a bit simple at times, but that gives the book it's charm. Well, maybe "charm" is the wrong word. There's a lot of dark stuff happening here, so it's not a light, fluffy book. But, it is refreshing. My only significant issue with it is that as he approaches "way-points" in the story, he tends to keep adding additional details. So, as the tension builds, the movement towards a goal slows. Still, all-in-all, it's nicely done. I'm rating it a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.
